1. 将句子化繁为简：以能清楚表达重点为原则
有些作者们会试图在一个英语句子中塞入很多信息，但这需要很高的写作技巧。若无法正确掌握复杂的句子，宁可将句子结构简化来避免误导读者。
例句：It is important that you do not leave the air fryer belonging to Amy unattended, as it has a broken fuse and it could catch fire.
改写：Do not leave Amy’s air fryer unattended. Its fuse is broken so it could catch fire.
例句：Slower labor force growth may attenuate the problem of unemployment over the next decade, since there will no longer be a need to absorb large numbers of new workers entering the labor market.
改写：With fewer younger workers entering the job market, unemployment may drop over the next decade.
2. 避免使用非正式用语
在撰写正式的英语报告或论文时，应尽量避免使用非正式、较口语的单词或表述方式。
“Bad、good、big、small、better、worse、really、very、quite、great、a little bit、kind of” 等词汇可以用更具体的单词来替换，以提供更多细节并提升文章的质感，例如：
例句：The steak tastes good.
改写：The steak tastes tender and juicy.
例句：She looks kind of pale.
改写：She looks somewhat pale.
例句：Carol drinks a lot of water after she exercises every day.
改写：Carol drinks large amounts of water after she exercises every day.
3. 减少铺陈、尽量使文章简洁有力
我们在学习中文写作时，老师常会建议为文章做铺陈，但这样的内容在英语写作中可能被视为冗赘。英语作文比较平铺直叙，通常在第一段破题，提出自己的看法，接着展开说明，最后撰写结论。一个英语学术写作的大原则是：用最少的字数清楚表达文章的意思；减少使用 “there is/are” 句型便是一个精简文章的好方法。
例句：There are many problems that we may encounter.
改写：We may encounter many problems.
例句中的 “there are” 是填充词（filler），拿掉并不影响文意，反而让句子变简洁。
4. 避免使用非正式缩读词
缩读词（contraction）是由两个或两个以上常常一起出现所构成的合成字。缩读词较常出现在口语或非正式场合，用在正式写作容易让人觉得没礼貌。举例来说，“I wanna talk to you about my grades” 会比 “I want to talk to you about my grades” 来得不正式。
另外，有些缩读字有两种解读的方式：“he’s、she’s” 和 “it’s” 中的 “’s” 可以是 “is” 也可以是 “has” 的意思；“we’d、they’d” 中的 “’d” 可以是 “did” 也可以是 “would” 的意思。
有鉴于此，建议书写较正式的英语报告、论文或书籍时，应避免缩读字；例如：
“Can’t” 应写成 “cannot”
“Don’t” 应写成 “do not”
“I’m” 应写成 “I am”
“Isn’t” 应写成 “is not”
5. 避免连写句（run-on sentence）
连写句是两个或更多的独立子句（independent clause）放在同一个句子，且未使用适当的标点符号或连接词。这类句型在中文中较常出现，但在正规英语的写作中，连写句被视作一种语法错误。
例句：Netflix is an online streaming platform, it offers many movies and TV shows.
改写：
1. Netflix is an online streaming platform. It offers many movies and TV shows.
2. Netflix is an online streaming platform, and it offers many movies and TV shows.
3. Netflix is an online streaming platform; it offers many movies and TV shows.
4. Netflix is an online streaming platform that offers many movies and TV shows.
